Tikal National Park (a quick guide)

Before my last trip abroad, I did a lot of research about Mayan ruins throughout central america and I chose to go To Tikal. It was the correct choice. This place was amazing. Here’s a quick guide of tips to make sure your trip is worth it.

Find the best guide that you afford

Knowing the history behind an archeological site of such grand importance and the rainforest that surrounds it will greatly enhance your experience. I suggest that you be diligent in searching for the best guide within your budget. Search for an entertaining expert. Unfortunately I no longer have my guide’s contact information to share with you. Make sure your guide is fluent in English if you don’t speak Spanish.

Book the sunrise tour

The only correct tour to take is the sunrise tour. You will be guided through the rainforest in the dark before dawn, and hopefully your guide can give you some key information about the flora, fauna and animals in the environment. You will then reach the ruins and walk up one of the temples and sit there, witnessing the rainforest “wake up”. It’s a fascinating experience hearing all of animals from insects and birds, to howler monkeys as the sun rises. (It’s a bit brisk in the morning so I suggest wearing a sweater or light jacket)

Make sure your tour is a small group

Small or medium sized groups only. This will ensure that you receive as much information as possible from the guide and you won’t be in a rush. You’ll have time to ask questions.

Stay in Flores and leave from there

Flores is the closest city to Tikal. It’s about 65 km away. The goal is to limit travel time because you’re going to spend a lot of energy walking around the park. You’ll be picked up very early in morning and travel by van. Stay at Los Amigos hostel as it is the best hostel in Flores, but don’t book a tour through them. Find your own guide.

Go during dry season

This is generally between November and April.

Bring cash and your passport

Have cash to pay the entrance fee to the park. It’s most likely not going to be included with your tour payment. The fee is approximately 150 GTQ ($20) plus another 100QTC for the sunrise tour fee. Also bring your passport. It’s required for entry. It sucks I know but we can’t do anything about it.

Food and water

Your tour may not include food. It’s best to be well fed on a tour like this. Even if lunch is included, bring snacks or a meal anyway. Have enough water too because it may be hot. Also wear long sleeves or insect repellent early in the morning from your walk through the rainforest. There may be a lot of mosquitos out around that time.

Enjoy the coatis!
