Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park: A Guide to Visiting in Grand Rapids

What Is Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park?

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is a 158-acre botanical garden, sculpture park, and cultural attraction in Grand Rapids, Michigan. What makes it attractive is the way it combines horticulture and art. Much of the art is scattered throughout gardens, meadows, walking paths, and other outdoor spaces. Inside the main building, a rotation of specialty exhibits is featured as well.

During my last visit, I had the opportunity to see a mesmerizing exhibition of the phenomenal glass artist Dale Chihuly. Just in case you’re reading this in 2026, CHIHULY at Meijer Gardens is running from May 1 through November 1. The exhibition includes both indoor and outdoor works.

What to See at Meijer Gardens

The grounds of Meijer Gardens include more than enough variety of stimuli, including:

  • Five indoor gardens, conservatories, and greenhouses
  • Outdoor gardens and nature trails
  • Sculpture galleries and a permanent sculpture collection
  • Library
  • Café
  • Amphitheater
  • Educational spaces

The Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory is particularly impressive as the largest tropical conservatory in Michigan. The most recognized staple of the entire park is probably the Richard & Helen DeVos Japanese Garden, covering eight acres.

And because the gardens change with the seasons, a return visit should never be ruled out. I’ve gone three times so far, and I don’t plan on stopping!

Popular Recurring Events at Meijer Gardens

BUTTERFLIES ARE BOOMING

One of the Gardens’ signature annual attractions is Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies Are Blooming, which takes place each spring in the Tropical Conservatory. It’s billed by Meijer Gardens as the largest temporary tropical butterfly exhibition in the United States, with thousands of butterflies and moths flying freely through the tropical environment.

PLANT SHOWS

Meijer Gardens also hosts a series of specialty plant shows throughout the year, including:

  • Orchid Show — January
  • Michigan All-State Bonsai Show — May
  • Daylily Show — July
  • Dahlia Show — August
  • Fall Bonsai Show — October

The bonsai trees in the photos below are part of what I believe is a permanent collection because I saw them in August. The show in October isn’t the only time bonsai trees are showcased.

SUMMER CONCERT SERIES

Summer concerts at Meijer Gardens are another major part of the institution’s identity. The amphitheater hosts local, regional, national, and international performers during the summer. The 2026 season, for example, included acts such as Switchfoot, Indigo Girls, and Punch Brothers.

AUTUMN EVENTS

Fall brings Autumn Weekends, harvest activities, live music, and seasonal displays, while October includes family-friendly Halloween programming and the Fall Bonsai Show.

HOLIDAY SEASON

The experience changes again during the holidays. The seasonal greenhouse and indoor gardens become part of the Christmas & Holiday Traditions programming, including the popular Railway Garden. The Gardens’ seasonal displays are one reason the institution can feel substantially different from one visit to another. From the light shows outdoors to the Christmas trees inside, it’s a delightful presentation!

A Quick History of Meijer Gardens

In 1990, Fred and Lena Meijer were approached by Betsy Borre about supporting the idea of creating a major cultural attraction centered around horticulture and sculpture. The Meijers embraced the concept, and their support helped turn the project into reality.

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park opened in April 1995. What began as a regional cultural project has grown considerably since then. The organization says that more than 16 million people have visited since opening. Fred Meijer died in 2011, but the organization continues to operate as a nonprofit with the mission of promoting appreciation of gardens, sculpture, the natural environment, and the arts. It is a privately funded nonprofit organization. Its support comes from a combination of individual and corporate donations, foundations, grants, memberships, admissions, events, sponsorships, and other earned revenue.
